Kids Session FAQ

What should my child wear?

I LOVE KIDS! They are my favorite and I love getting to know them and their individual personalities. Let them be kids! Don't expect them to be perfect and smile for the camera. I like to capture them as they are. During a session I capture all of their expressions and what makes them unique. I do to keep the session minimal, keeping the focus on them, although I encourage you to bring one of their favorite things (stuffy, blanket, sports equipment, pets, etc) because they really shine when they are showing off the things that make them happy. I believe every child is important and special and should be celebrated with portraits.

What is the best age to photograph kids?

Really every age is the best age! I love kids ages 4-7 because they still have their sweet baby face and are just so cute and funny. They have the best energy and expressions. 8 year olds are really special because it's the last time they still look like a little kid - missing crooked teeth and all :)  10 year olds are sassy and coming into their own with the things they like and don't like which makes it fun. Preteens are into their clothes and being cool and of course teenagers are so full of life and energy. So really you can't go wrong, just make sure you capture something. They change so fast!

I have been photographing kids for 20 years I have learned tricks on how to get them to open up and be themselves in front of the camera. I love to spend time getting to know them and what makes them tick. I am good with energetic extroverts and shy introverted kids. Bring me all the kids!

Where do kids sessions take place?

We do show both color and black and white images for these sessions. These timeless images of your child print beautifully in color or black and white. We can provide recommendations for what will look great with your home decor.

By all means YES! We love kids and dogs! We will speak with you beforehand to make sure your dog is the right fit for the studio, but we have clients bring pets all the time.

Do you offer kids mini sessions?

We recommend simple, neutral clothing in the studio with texture. When you book your session we will send over our wardrobe planning guide that has ideas for you, and we can book a pre-consultation to plan your session and wardrobe.

Modern Kids sessions take place in our Aliso Viejo studio. We have weekday and Saturday availability depending on the time of year.
